2005: FPA Holds a Rally to Urge on the Governor to Sign the Unintended Pregnancy Prevention Act

In 2005 Family Planning Advocates along with other women’s health organizations advocated for the passage of the Unintended Pregnancy Prevention Act, a piece of legislation which would have allowed pharmacists, in collaboration with local physicians, to provide emergency contraception with out a prescription. By the end of the legislative session in June, both the New York State Assembly and Senate had overwhelmingly passed the legislation. However in early August, Governor Pataki had announced his intentions to veto this important piece of legislation. FPA sprung into action and organized a rally attended by over a hundred advocates on the day of the Governor’s veto. Speakers at the rally included JoAnn Smith, president and CEO of FPA, members of the clergy, teens and local physicians. Shortly following the rally, the Governor officially vetoed the legislation.
