Special Edition: Day of Action 2010
What a week! We wanted to send you a quick report on the successes from our Day of Action last week. We hope you find it exciting and informative.
More than 300 activists converged on the State Capitol last week for Family Planning Advocates’ Women’s Health Matters: A Day of Action. Advocates traveled nearly 2,000 miles from around the state and held more than 100 meetings with legislators.
The Day of Action drew a lot of new and young activists—some of them who attended for the first time. Their message was clear: state investment in family planning is smart budgeting—a particularly important point during one of the state’s most challenging fiscal times in decades.

Keynote Speaker and New York Times Bestselling Author Michelle Goldberg
gave the crowd an international perspective on reproductive health and justice based on her 2008 book "The Means of Reproduction: Sex, Power and the Future of the World." She talked of the need to do more, both here and abroad, to provide women with comprehensive reproductive health care.

Syracuse University Student Sammy Lifton and her mom,
who attended her first FPA advocacy event 30 years ago, were excited to be sharing the day with one another. Sammy wrote of her experiences in a blog post that you can read here.

Advocates from around the state heard from Governor David Paterson
and other elected leaders who spoke of their support for family planning and the full range of reproductive and sexual health services in New York State.

Members of the Assembly Cahill, Jaffee, Koon, Gunther, Skatardos and Rosenthal
took to the podium to lend their support. Each spoke of their support of comprehensive reproductive health care for all New Yorkers and of a women’s right to choose.

Senator Liz Krueger—a longtime prochoice champion—spoke of the importance of women’s voices
in public policy and how excited she was to see Family Planning Advocates speaking to lawmakers.

A lot is going on here in Albany regarding the State budget, plus, we are heading to Washington, D.C. to press New York's congressional delegation to ensure access to abortion coverage in health care reform. You should be receiving an update from us again in a few weeks.
